Yellow-rumped Warbler
Setophaga coronata
The Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata) is a common nesting bird across much of the montane west of the United States as well as across a large area of Canada and Alaska. The species is quite hardy, especially for a warbler, and winters across the southern half of the United States, even in very cold temperatures. This species is one of the warblers that even beginning bird watchers become quickly familiar with. At times in the winter in the southern United States, the "butter butts" seem to be everywhere! The first two shots were taken in Starr Co., Texas, in February, 1999, with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender on Fuji Velvia. Scroll down for more images.
The next two shots, below, of Yellow-rumped Warblers, were taken at the same place as the top two shots and with the same gear.
The shot shown here was taken in December, 1999, in Kenedy Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600mm F/4 L lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Provia film.
The shot shown here was taken in January, 2000, in Kenedy Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600mm F/4 L lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Provia film.
The shot shown here, a digital image, was taken in Gonzales Co., Texas, in January, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next two shots shown here were taken of Yellow-rumped Warblers foraging in some vegetation on Lake Tohopekaliga, Osceola Co., Florida, in February, 2007. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. Both of these birds are starting to molt into breeding plumage. Note the foot and leg of the top bird, obviously some sort of malformation or disease.
The wintering Yellow-rumped Warbler shown here was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in January, 2009. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The "Audubon's" race Yellow-rumped Warbler shown here was a spring migrant in Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas, in May, 2010.
The Yellow-rumped Warbler on the right was at Anchorage, Alaska, in May, 2012.
