Yellow-crowned Night-Heron
Nyctanassa violacea
As the name implies, the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) is often a nocturnal feeder, but it is often active during the day as well. The adult shown here was photographed at Anahuac N.W.R., Chambers Co., Texas, in April, 1996, with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F/4.5 lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Sensia. The wid was blowing which the two plumes on its head to stand up.
The adult on the right was at Ding Darling N.W.R., Lee Co., Florida, in December, 2004, and was shot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender.
To the right is a shot of an immature Yellow-crowned Night-Heron at Galveston, Galveston Co., Texas, in September, 1999. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender on Fuji Sensia.
The next two shots show an adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron on Sanibel Island, Lee Co., Florida, in November, 2006. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.

The Yellow-crowned Night-Herons which occur on the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador are considerably darker than those in the U.S. This shot was taken in the Galapagos during July, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 L IS lens.
The next three shots show immature Yellow-crowned Night-Herons on Tower Island in the Galapagos Islands in August, 2010. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens.
