Verdin
Auriparus flaviceps
The Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps) is a small desert bird of the American Southwest and many areas of Mexico. Its bright yellow face and reddish shoulder patch are distinctive. The Verdin shown at right was in Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona, in April, 2005, and was digitally photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next four shots were taken in May and June 2006 in Hidalgo Co., Texas with the same equipment described above. The shot at right shows a Verdin at the entrance to its nest.
The Verdin here is perched on the spines of a Prickly Pear, illustrating how tiny this bird is.
This shot is a typical view of a Verdin perched in a mesquite.
The next 3 images show Verdins in Catalina, Pima Co., Arizona, in March, 2009. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III. The 1st two shots with an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS land and the 3rd shot with an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
The next 3 shots of Verdins were taken in Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas, in May, 2010.
