Surf Scoter
Melanitta perspicillata
The Surf Scoter (Melanitta perspicillata) is a diving duck which breeds across much of Canada and Alaska and winters along both coasts. This flock of distant Surf Scoters was at Haines, Alaska, in August, 2008.
The winter plumaged immature Surf Scoter shown here was at Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in December, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The next 8 shots show a mostly breeding plumaged male Surf Scoter which made a surprising visit to Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in March, 2010. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
