The Rusty Blackbird (Euphagus carolinus) breeds across much of Canada and Alaska and winters in the eastern United States. The species prefers wet habitats such as marshes, swamps, or wet bottomland forest. The first eight images on this page show a few individuals which wintered in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in December, 2011. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The fall plumaged female in the next several images shows the rusty tinged feathers on the back and wings contrasting with a gray rump.
