Spermophilus variegatus
The Rock Squirrel (Spermophilus variegatus) is a widespread squirrel on the American southwest and much of Mexico. It occurs from central and west Texas westward to southern California, Nevada, and Utah. It can be commonly seen in some areas of its range and is often not shy around humans. This species is one of the largest ground squirrel species in the U.S. The Rock Squirrel shown here was in Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona, in March, 2009. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 40D and an EF 70-200 mm F/2.8 L IS lens.
