Blue-striped Spreadwing
Lestes tenuatus
The Blue-striped Spreadwing (Lestes tenuatus) was previously only known from south Florida within the United States. In September, 2008, Dennis Paulson along with Martin Reid found a small population of these spreadwings near Willow Lake at Santa Ana, N.W.R., Hidalgo Co., Texas to provide a first Texas record. The first 7 images on this page were also taken in September, 2008 at Santa Ana, a few days after the initial discovery. The first 3 images show a female. These 7 images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash.
A pair in copula is shown here, while 3 shots of male Blue-striped Spreadwings follow.
The next 2 shots of a male Blue-striped Spreadwing were taken in June, 2009, at the same location and with the same gear as previously described.
The next 3 images, a single male shown here and 2 shots of a pair in tandem following, were taken at Santa Ana N.W.R., Hidalgo Co., Texas, in October, 2009, with the same photo gear as previously described.
The male Blue-striped Spreadwings in the next four shots were in Santa Ana N.W.R., Hidalgo Co., Texas, in December, 2010. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
