Long-toed Stint
Calidris subminuta
This Long-toed Stint (Calidris subminuta), a juv., provided the first record for California and one of just a few for the Lower 48 states. This is a species not known well by North American observers so I posted these images in the event they are of any interest to birders. This bird was present at Salinas, Monterey Co., CA from 29 August-2 September 1988. These photos were taken 1 September 1988 with a Minolta X570 & 120-600 mm Vivitar lens on Kodachrome 64. The camera and lens were hand held on a BushHawk shoulder mount. Rare bird photography often demands that the photos be taken in much less than ideal conditions. The bird in these shots was badly back lighted, but there was no way to photograph it from another angle. With rarity photography you have to get what you can. See four other shots of this same bird below.
