Lewis's Woodpecker
Melanerpes lewis
The Lewis's Woodpecker (Melanerpes lewis) occurs throughout much of the Rocky Mountains of the American west. It is, however, a species prone to wander in the non-breeding season, and individuals have been found well to the east and south of the regular range. The Lewis's Woodpecker shown here spent the winter of 2003-2004 at Balcones Canyonlands, N.W.R., Travis Co., Texas. This shot was taken in December, 2003, with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 600mm F/4 L lens and 2X extender.
