Imperial Shag
Phalacrocorax atriceps
The Imperial Shag (Phalacrocorax atriceps) is considered a member of the "Blue-eyed Shag" complex, formerly considered all one species. The "blue eye" is actually skin surrounding the dark iris and is most evident in the breeding season. This species breeds commonly on both coasts of southern South America and on the Falklands. The taxonomy of these birds is complex and several more species may be involved. The shots here show some Imperial Shags at a breeding colony on New Island in the Falklands, in January, 2004. A couple of Rockhopper Penguins are visible in the top image. These images were digital captures with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L lens and a 1.4X extender.
