Green Violet-ear
Colibri thalassinus
The Green Violet-ear (Colibri thalassinus) occurs throughout a large area of the highlands of Mexico, Central America, and South America. In July, 1961, a Green Violet-ear was found in South Texas. Since that time there have been more than 40 additional accepted records of this species in Texas as well as a number of other records from locations such as Louisiana, Arkansas, North Carolina, and even Canada! The species certainly is prone to wander, especially in mid and late summer when most of the extralimital records occur. The three photos shown at the top of the page were taken in June, 1995, at Sandy Creek, Travis Co., Texas where the bird visited a feeder for a number of days. The photos were taken with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F4.5 lens and 1.4X extender and Fresnel flash on Fuji Sensia 100. This bird is not as brightly plumaged as some, probably because it is not a full adult. See below for images from elsewhere.
The next three images show Green Violet-ears near Machu Picchu, Peru, in July, 2006. These three images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
