Groove-billed Ani
Crotophaga sulcirostris
The Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris) is essentially a species of South and Central America which barely enters the United States in south Texas during spring and summer. The species is quite common throughout its range and it can be frequently seen in loose flocks moving from feeding area to feeding area. It is known to wander widely and there are many extralimital records away from its regular range. The two top shots here were taken in Starr Co., Texas, in May, 1996, with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F/4.5 lens on Fuji Sensia. The shot of the two birds at the edge of a water hole was taken in September, 1995, at the same location and with the same gear. The next shot, of a bird perched among some green vines, is a digital capture in Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in May, 2004, with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender.
