| The Green Parakeet (Aratinga holochlora) is essentially a bird of Mexico and parts of central America. Beginning in the late 1970s and early 1980s, however, small groups of these birds started showing up in extreme south Texas. There was a lively controversy regarding whether or not these birds were wandering individuals from wild population in Mexico, or escaped (or released) captives. By the late 1980s flocks of hundreds were sometimes seen in south Texas and they have been breeding at many Texas locales for a number of years. I personally believe the original birds were naturally occupying birds, but regardless, they are here now. The Green Parakeets on this page were shot in February, 2001, in McAllen, Hidalgo Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 600mm F/4 L lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Velvia. The bird at right is investigating a nesting cavity in a dead palm trunk. |
