Spot-winged Glider
Pantala hymenaea
The Spot-winged Glider (Pantala hymenaea), so called from the small dark bases to the hind wing, occurs across much of the U.S. except the high Rockies. The glider shown at right was resting on a weed stalk in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in June, 2003. The shot was taken with a Canon EOS 10D and 70-200 mm F2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender and 550 EX flash. The next shot was also taken in Austin, but in May, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4L IS lens and 580EX flash.
The next two shots were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in April, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
