| The Rusty Snaketail (Ophiogomphus rupinsulensis) inhabits flowing clear streams and rivers in the northeastern third of the U.S., and parts of southeast Canada. It ranges south into the Appalachians to Kentucky and Tennessee. It can be fairly common in the right habitat. The first three shots here were taken on the Petawawa River, Renfrew Co., Ontario, Canada, in July, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash. This species was quite common at this location and many of them could easily be seen foraging over some shallow rapids. |  |
