Red Squirrel
Tamiasciurus hudsonicus
The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is the smallest tree squirrel in its range and occurs across most of Canada as well as Alaska and much of the western regions of the lower 48 states. It is also known as the "Pine Squirrel" and "Chickaree" in some areas. The individual in the top image was photographed near Loomis, Okanogan Co., Washington in June 1998, with a Canon T90 and a Canon 400 mm f5.6 lens on Fuji Sensia.
The next 3 Red Squirrel images were taken near Breckenridge, Summit Co., Colorado, in July, 2008, with a Canon EOS 40D and an EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens.
Red Squirrels in the northeastern United States are often more reddish in color than their western counterparts. The animal shown here was in the White Mountains of Grafton Co., New Hampshire, in June, 2010.
The Red Squirrel on the right was near Anchorage, Alaska, in June, 2012.
