American Pika
Ochotona princeps
The American Pika (Ochotona princeps) is a small rabbit-like mammal of rocky areas and talus slopes in the high Rocky Mountains of the western United States and Canada. They feed on seeds and grasses and may venture into meadows and woodlands while foraging, but scamper back to their protective rocks when alarmed. The first 20 images on this page were taken near Blue Lakes, Summit Co., Colorado, in July, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The shot shown here shows the Pika vocalizing.
