Abronia smithi
Smith's Arboreal Alligator Lizard (Abronia smithi) is a little known lizard of the cloud forests of southern Mexico. This species was apparently described new to science in 1993 and very little information is available to the general public about this animal at this time. In March, 2000, I was leading a birding trip in the El Triunfo Cloud Forest of Chiapas, Mexico when we located this strange lizard. We had no idea what it was, and despite a dozen or more visits to this region in previous years, this was the first one of these lizards I had ever seen. I was not able to get any natural photos of the lizard, since it would quickly run off if it was put on the ground. The photos here were taken while a friend held onto a back leg of the lizard to keep it in one spot. After a few photos we released the animal. I have since learned that this is Abronia smithi so I've posted a few photos since very little is available on the Internet about this lizard. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 180mm F/3.5 Macro on Fuji Sensia.
