The Eastern Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus collaris), sometimes called Common Collared Lizard or simply Collared Lizard, is a large, showy lizard of the American southwest and parts of Mexico. It is a colorful species that inhabits rocky and brushy terrain. The first seven shots on this page were taken in Cottonwood Canyon, Comanche National Grasslands, Baca Co., Colorado, in July, 2011, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash. It was a very hot and sunny day; note how the lizard picks its feet up off the hot rock surface and only makes contact with its "heel".
