Varied Bunting
Passerina versicolor
The Varied Bunting (Passerina versicolor) is a beautiful little desert bunting of the southwest whose range barely enters the United States in west Texas as well as parts of New Mexico and Arizona. From a distance the bird looks dark all over, but when seen well it is a flashy creature that is sought out by many bird watchers visiting its range. The singing Varied Bunting seen here was photographed in June, 2001, near Ozona, Crockett Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500 mm F4L IS lens and 2X extender on Fuji Velvia.
The next two shots were taken in June, 2005, at the same location as the previous image. These shots are digital captures with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next four shots at right were taken in May, 2006 in Hidalgo Co., Texas, on the very eastern edge of the range of this species in south Texas. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next 7 images of Varied Bunting were taken in May, 2010, in Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
