Red-shouldered Hawk
Buteo lineatus
The Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a resident of most of the eastern half of the United States as well as along the coast of California. While many remain year round in their breeding territories, some winter well into Mexico. The bird shown here was perched on a pole in Guadalupe Co., Texas, in February, 2003. This is a digital image with a Canon D60 and EF 600mm F/4 L lens and 1.4X extender.
The below image shows an immature Red-shouldered Hawk. This shot was taken in January, 2000, in Kenedy Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600mm F/4 L lens on Fuji Velvia.
The next three images show Red-shouldered Hawks on Sanibel Island, Lee Co., Florida, in November, 2006. The central Florida birds are quite pale in comparison the birds in other areas of the U.S. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens. The first two shots show an adult bird, while an immature is below.
The adult Red-shouldered Hawk below was at Three Lakes W.M.A., Osceola Co., Florida, in March, 2007.It was photographed with the same gear as the shots just above.
The next 3 images, two of which show a pair side by side, were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in January, 2009, on a misty day as the birds kept watch over a creek bed. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
