The Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) is a widespread and familiar species across much of the eastern two-thirds of the United States. Males and females are alike in plumage. The first 12 images on this page were taken in the Texas Panhandle in Hansford Co., in July, 2009, with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens. I have always thought that this species is our most beautiful woodpecker. | |
