Pine Siskin
Spinus pinus
The Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus) is a small finch which breeds in the montane western United States and much of Canada. The species winters across much of the United States and into Mexico. It can be common at bird feeders and is one of the very familiar birds in suburban gardens in many areas. Thefirst two shots here were taken in March, 2005, near Austin, Travis Co., Texas. Theses were wintering birds which had not yet headed north. They were visiting a bird feeder near a blooming Texas Red Bud which offered some colorful perches. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next two shots on the right were taken in Briscoe Co., Texas in November, 2005 with the same camera gear as the previous shots. This bird was part of a flock of around 50 wintering birds.
The next four Pine Siskin shots show birds on the breeding grounds at Breckenridge, Summit Co., Colorado, in June. 2007. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next two Pine Siskin shots were taken in Breckenridge, Summit Co., Colorado, in July, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
