Black Tern
Chlidonias niger
The Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) is a mostly black tern which breeds in on lakes, marshes, and prairie potholes of parts of the northern United States and Canada. It winters on the coasts of Central and South America. The first 6 shots on this page were taken on South Padre Island, Cameron Co., Texas, in May, 2010. These are birds still on their way north to breed. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The Black Tern shown here is still in mostly basic (winter) plumage.
The spring migrant Black Tern on the right was at Sea Rim State Park, Jefferson Co., Texas, in May, 2013.
