Goldtail
Allocnemis leucosticta
The Goldtail (Allocnemis leucosticta) is a delightful damselfly endemic to South Africa. Its flight, from my very limited experience, is very slow and helicopter-like allowing the golden-tipped abdomen to appear as a tiny light bulb as it moves through the shady stream side vegetation. The two top photos shown here were photographed in Blyde River Canyon, Mpumalanga Province, while the pair in tandem was photographed along Whisky Creek near Pilgrim's Rest in the same province. The three shots were taken in January, 2006, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
