The Soapberry Hairstreak (Phaeostrymon alcestis) is a localized butterfly of parts of Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and New Mexico. It is seldom found far from its larval food plant, soapberry trees but sometimes feeds on nearby blooming plants. The first 2 shots on this page were taken in May, 2008, at the Nails Creek Unit of Lake Somerville State Park, Lee Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash.
The Soapberry Hairstreak on the rigt was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in May, 2011. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
