Black Noddy
Anous minutus
The Black Noddy (Anous minutus) is a small tropical tern that occasionally shows up in the United States, usually in the Dry Tortugas on Florida's keys. These shots were taken at Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas back in April, 1996, with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/5.6 lens. The images were taken from a bouncing boat as a group of us cruised past the large colony of Brown Noddies (A. stolidus) that is a summer bird there. Among the many Brown Noddies we spotted a single Black Noddy. There are two shots of the Black Noddy and one shot with both species in the same frame, the Brown Noddy on the right and the Black Noddy shown here. Note the thinner, straighter bill of the Black Noddy as well as the more sharply delineated white cap.
