Wild Turkey
Meleagris gallopavo
The Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a resident across a wide area of the United States as well as parts of Mexico and Canada. It is the largest game bird in North America and quite familiar to many Americans. Populations of this species have been managed for many years in the U.S. and their numbers are now probably higher than they have ever been. The first seven images on this page were all taken in April, 2006, in Hidalgo Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and several different lenses. I have added some close-up shots to show detail of feathers and feet below.
The Wild Turkey shown here was strolling through the town of Lipscomb, Lipscomb Co., Texas, in April, 2007. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens.
The Wild Turkeys in the next two shots were near Lipscomb, Lipscomb Co., Texas, in April, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens.
