White-winged Dove
Zenaida asiatica
The White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica) is widespread across much of Mexico and the southwest United States. An adult is shown at right with a juvenile bird at right the adult. Both these images were taken in the Davis Mountains, Jeff Davis Co., Texas, in June, 2001, with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens on Fuji Velvia. Twenty years ago a White-winged Dove in central Texas would have been quite a rarity, but the species is expanding its range and are now very common urban birds in many central Texas cities and towns. There are times when hundreds may invade some neighborhood and quickly empty sunflower feeders such as the one shown below. This shot was taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in May, 2001, with the same equipment and film as described above.
The adult White-winged Dove shown here was standing at the edge of a water hole in Starr Co., Texas in April, 2007. This image was shot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens/
The White-winged Dove shown here was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in December, 2008. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 40D and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
