White-tipped Dove
Leptotila verreauxi
The White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) is essentially a tropical species which only enters the United States in deep south Texas. The species ranges south through Mexico and Central America all the way to Peru and Argentina. Its vocalization, which sounds to some as if a person was blowing across the mouth of a coke bottle, is a familiar sound in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The first 6 images shown here were all taken in spring and early summer, 2006, in Hidalgo Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and a 1.4 or 2X extender.
The below two shots show some courtship interaction between a pair of these doves.
