Whiskered Screech-Owl
Otus trichopis
The Whiskered Screech-Owl (Otus trichopis) is essentially a Mexican species which occurs in the U.S. only in s.e. Arizona. It can be fairly common in some mountain ranges in Mexico and the species ranges as far south as El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It's "morse code" song is distinctly different from the vocalizations of the similar sized Western Screech-Owl. The shots here were taken in April, 2003, in Madera Canyon, Santa Cruz Co., Arizona. These are digital shots taken with a Canon EOS 10D and an EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and flash. These shots represent three different birds.
The Whiskered Screech-Owl shown here was found during daylight hours as it stood at the entrance to its nesting cavity in a large sycamore tree in the Huachuca Mountains, Cochise Co., Arizona, in May, 2008. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1/4X extender.
A close up look at the same owl as above.
The next 4 shots of Whiskered Screech-Owl were taken in the Chiricahua Mountains, Cochise Co., Arizona, also in May, 2008, with the same gear described above.
In the next two shots, another Whiskered Screech-Owl peers from its hole in an oak tree during daylight hours.
