Seaside Sparrow
Ammodramus maritimus
As the name implies, the Seaside Sparrow (Ammodramus maritimus) is a bird of coastal marshland from New England south to Florida and west to south Texas. There are a number of geographically different races of the species recognized. The birds in the top 11 images on this page are of the Texas subspecies, A. m. sennetti. These 11 shots were taken in mid June, 2008, at Texas Point, Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co., Texas. The birds I saw that day appeared to be a pair of adults and 4 juvenile birds. The adults are grayer below and show a yellow spot or the lores. The adults were still singing even though it was rather late in the nesting cycle. Even some of the juvenile birds were trying their hand at song. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
