Scarlet Tanager
Piranga olivacea
The Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea) breeds across much of the eastern United States and parts of Canada. The species winters in northern South America. The male is brilliant red with black wings and tail, but the female is more subdued, with an olive/yellow body and darker gray wings and tail. The first 4 shots on this page show a spring migrant female Scarlet Tanager at South Padre Island, Cameron Co., Texas, in April, 2009. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
