The Red-naped Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus nuchalis) is the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin representative of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker complex. The species nests from northern New Mexico and Arizona up through the Rocky Mountains to southern British Columbia. It winters south through the Trans-Pecos of Texas well into Mexico. The male shown here was at Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas, in December, 1992. This shot was taken with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/4.5 lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
