Red-naped Sapsucker
Sphyrapicus nuchalis
The Red-naped Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus nuchalis) is the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin representative of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker complex. The species nests from northern New Mexico and Arizona up through the Rocky Mountains to southern British Columbia. It winters south through the Trans-Pecos of Texas well into Mexico. The male shown here was at Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas, in December, 1992. This shot was taken with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/4.5 lens on Kodachrome 200 film. The next shot, of another male, was taken at Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Culberson Co., Texas, in December, 1994, with the same equipment.
The next two shots of Red-naped Sapsucker, show a male at Red Rock Pass, Targhee National Forest, Fremont Co., Idaho, in June, 2007. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
