| The Red Knot (Calidris canutus) winters from the lower Pacific coast of California to the Gulf Coast as well as the southern Atlantic coast of Florida, all the way down to the southern tip of South America. The species breeds on the high Arctic tundra of parts of northern Alaska and Canada. Winter plumaged birds are mostly gray, but breeding plumaged birds become quite reddish overall. The first 3 shots on this page show breeding plumaged Red Knots near the southern tip of Texas at the mouth of the Rio Grande in Cameron Co., Texas. These particular birds were on their northward migration. These 3 images were taken in April, 2009, with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens. |
