Reddish Egret
Egretta rufescens
The Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) is found along the south Atlantic coastline of the United States as well as the coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of California. It is widespread in much of coastal Mexico as well. This species has two color morphs, dark and white. The dark-morph adult at right was at a breeding colony along the Texas coast in Nueces County near Corpus Christi in March, 1991. It was photographed with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/5.6 lens on Ektachrome film.
This immature white-morph bird was at Port Aransas, Nueces Co., Texas, in December, 1994, and was photographed with the same equipment as the previous shot on Kodachrome 64.
The dark-morph adult in flight was at Bolivar Flats, Galveston Co., Texas in September, 1999, and was photographed with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender on Fuji Sensia.
This shot shows a dark morph immature Reddish Egret in June, 1997, at Bolivar Flats, Galveston Co., Texas. The shot was taken with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F/4.5 lens on Fuji Sensia film.
The Reddish Egret in the next 2 shots was on South Padre Island, Cameron Co., Texas, in April, 2009. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The next 4 shots show a Reddish Egret in winter plumage at Bolivar Flats, Galveston Co., Texas, in November, 2009. These images were all taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The flight shot shown here was cropped just to show the very narrow glide posture this species can sometimes show.
The next 2 shots of a Reddish Egret were taken at South Padre Island, Cameron Co., Texas, in May, 2010.
The dark morph Reddish Egret in the next nine images was on South Padre Island, Cameron Co., Texas, in December, 2010. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
Reddish Egrets are very active feeders, darting this way and that in rapid movements.
