Prothonotary Warbler
Protonotaria citrea
The Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea) breeds across much of the eastern United States usually in marshy or swamp-like habitats. The male shown in the top 2 shots was at a nest site in a dead tree trunk at Caddo Lake State Park, Harrison Co., Texas in June, 2003. The male and female were feeding several young birds in the "V" crevice just below the bird's foot in the two photos. The photos were digital captures and were shot with a Canon EOS 10D and 600 mm F4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender with a flash.
The male Prothonotary Warbler shown here in the next 2 shots was in Jasper Co., Texas, in June, 2008. These 2 shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The next 14 shots of a female (top 2 images) and male (next 12 images) Prothonotary Warbler, were taken in May, 2009, in Jasper Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 800mm F/5.^ L IS lens. I am certainly convinced that this is one of the most beautiful warblers that we have. These brilliant golden yellow birds in the green cypress foliage is just amazing to see!
