Ortalis vetula
The Plain Chachalaca (Ortalis vetula) is member of the guan family which ranges from extreme south Texas southward to Costa Rica. It is very elusive and hard to find in areas of the tropics where it is hunted, but in south Texas in many refuges and parks it is common and easy to see. The first two shots shown here were taken at Bentsen State Park, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in February 1999.
The next four shots were taken in Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in October, 1999.The first six images on this page were all taken with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens on Fuji Provia film.
The Plain Chachalacas in the next 3 shots were in McAllen, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in April, 2009.
In south Texas, Plain Chachalacas are often attracted to citrus fruit. In the next two shots, a group of three chachalacas is seen feeding on grapefruit in Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Texas. These two shots were taken in December, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens.
