Orchard Oriole
Icterus spurius
The Orchard Oriole (Icterus spurius) is a common nesting bird across much of the eastern half of the United States. The first 5 shots shown here show male Orchard Orioles in the extreme southeast corner of Texas, at Texas Point, Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co., Texas, in June, 2008. The Salt Cedar vegetation in this area serves as breeding habitat to several pairs of these orioles. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 l IS lens and 1.4X extender. The bird in the 5th shot is a singing first-year male bird.
The male Orchard Oriole shown here was on South Padre Island, Texas, in April, 2009. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The next two shots show an immature male Orchard Oriole in Kenedy Co., Texas, in April, 2000. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS camera and an EF 600mm F/4 L lens on Fuji Velvia film.
The young male Orchard Oriole in this shot has just been bathing in a small pool of water.
