White Rhinoceros
Ceratotherium simum
The White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is also known as the Square-lipped Rhinoceros. The latter name is really more appropriate since this animal is not white at all. This animal, and other rhinoceros species, simply take on the color of the mud and dirt which they have most recently been rolling in. They can be white, brown, reddish, or gray. The first three shots here show a mother and calf on the Polokwane Nature Reserve near Pietersburg, Limpopo Province, South Africa, in January, 2006. The next four shots show a few other White Rhinos on a private reserve near Malelane, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, also in January, 2006. All these shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
