Variable Darner
Aeshna interrupta
The Variable Darner (Aeshna interrupta) is a large, widespread darner of the northern United States and most of Canada. The species also ranges south into parts of the mid west as well as California and the Rocky Mountains down to Arizona and New Mexico. The female shown here and in the next image, was posed in Deschutes Co., Oregon, in August, 2008.
 
The female in the next two shots was in the Malheur National Forest, Grant Co., Oregon, in August, 2008. These two shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next two shots of a pair in copula were taken in the Clearwater National Forest, Idaho Co., Idaho, in August, 2008, with the same gear as previously described.
The next five shots of Variable Darners were taken in the Turtle Mountain area of Bottineau Co., North Dakota, in July, 2011, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
