Two-striped Forceptail
Aphylla williamsoni
The Two-striped Forceptail (Aphylla williamsoni) is an uncommon Gomphid of the southeastern U.S. It occurs locally from Virginia south and west to extreme east Texas. In July, 2005, I was visiting a farm pond near the historic village of Palo Alto in Clay Co., Mississippi, when I noted a Two-striped Forceptail foraging over the pond. The dragon never perched for wild photos, but I was able to net it for some hand-held shots.
In August, 2009, I was back at the same pond as above in Clay Co., Mississippi. I was able to get a few shots of a male Two-striped Forceptail on that occasion. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The female Two-striped Forceptails in the next two shots were at Bob Sandlin State Park, Titus Co., Texas, in June, 2011.
