Tamaulipan Clubtail
Gomphus gonzalezi
The Tamaulipan Clubtail (Gomphus gonzalezi) is a poorly known species that has been found in a few areas of the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas and adjacent northern Mexico. It is somewhat similar in appearance to both Plains Clubtail (G. externus) and Sulphur-tipped Clubtail (G. militaris). The first 3 shots on this page show a hand-held individual which had been captured by David and Jan Dauphin near the Rio Grande in Hidalgo Co., Texas, in May, 2010. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and Canon 580 flash.
The next 6 shots of male Tamaulipan Clubtails were taken near Mission, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in May, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 l IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. This dragonfly is quite similar visually to both Sulphur-tipped Clubtail (G. militaris) and Plains Clubtail (G. externus), but shows a 5th thorasic stripe that those 2 species lack as well as a different pattern on the abdomen and club. The legs also also dark which further separates it from Sulphur-tipped.
The next 2 shots show a Tamaulipan Clubtail with a Bordered Patch it caught.
