| The Slender Baskettail (Epitheca [Tetragoneuria] costalis) is sometimes also called Stripe-winged Baskettail. Some authorities consider this species to be the same as Dot-winged Baskettail, but for the time being I'll list it as separate here. essentially a dragonfly of the eastern half of the United States, westward into the southern Great Plains. The male in the top 2 shots here was in the Davy Crockett National Forest, Houston Co., Texas, in March, 2008. These images were shot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. All members of this genus complex can be extremely difficult to identify. The dusting of small specks on the abdomen of the dragonfly was pollen, probably pine pollen, which was in the air and thick on the ground on this day. |  |

| The teneral female Slender Baskettail in the next two shots was near the Angelina River, Jasper Co., Texas, in April, 2010. This individual was collected and the ID confirmed at the University of Texas Insect Collection, where the specimen is now housed.
