Skimming Bluet
Enallagma geminatum
The Skimming Bluet (Enallagma geminatum) is a widespread damselfly of the eastern United States and parts of southeast Canada. It is a common species on many ponds and marshes. The first 2 shots of a male shown here were taken in Taylor Co., Georgia, in July, 2005. These digital images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash. Most guide books indicate that the blue shoulder stripe is often constricted, but seldom broken. Giff Beaton, however, tells me that this broken blue shoulder stripe as shown by these shots, is a fairly common trait of the species in Georgia.
The next 8 shots of Skimming Bluet were taken in Broome Co., New York, in July, 2009, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. The last 2 of the 8 shots show male and female in tandem and in copula.
The next 5 shots of Skimming Bluets were taken near Freyburg, Oxford Co., Maine, in June, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The pair of Skimming Bluets on the right was on the edge of lake Sam Rayburn, San Augustine Co., Texas, in April, 2011.
