| The Red-tailed Pennant (Brachymesia furcata) is a medium sized tropical pennant of Texas and other areas of the southern and southwestern U.S. It also occurs in southern Florida. Most of my photography over the years has involved birds, so dragonflies have provided a different set of subjects to photograph. I enjoy photographing birds in flight when possible, but flight shots of birds are really tough. Well, I did not know what tough was until I tried to photograph dragonflies in flight! I spent several hours on a June 2002 day sitting along the edge of a cattle pond in south Texas (Kenedy Co.) trying to get some flight shots of some Red-tailed Pennants. Below are the best of my shots, but I would like to do a better job, eventually. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1V and 70-200 F2.8 L IS lens with a 2X extender and fill flash on Fuji Velvia. Below is another shot taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in July 2003. This third photo is a digital capture with a Canon EOS 10D and the same lens and extender as above. Scroll down for other shots. | The female Red-tailed Pennant is a rather nondescript looking dragonfly, but the thick base to the abdomen and the small orange/yellow patch at the base of the hind wing point toward an identification. This female Red-tailed Pennant was in Austin, Texas, in July, 2008. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash. |  |
