Racket-tailed Emerald
Dorocordulia libera
The Racket-tailed Emerald (Dorocordulia libera) occurs along wooded streams and marshes in the northeast U.S. and southeast Canada. The male shown in the top image here was photographed along a dirt road adjacent to a beaver pond in Timiskaming Co., Ontario, Canada, in July, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash. This male, and several others, were foraging along the dirt road in the late afternoon. They were seldom seen perched, but finally this one did so and allowed some photos.
The next 2 shots show another male Racket-tailed Emerald in Broome Co., New York in July, 2009. These 2 shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The Racket-tailed Emerald shown here was at Buzzard Swamp, Allegheny National Forest, Forest Co., Pennsylvania, in June, 2010. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next 6 images of male and female Racket-tailed Emeralds were all taken along the Saco River, Oxford Co., Maine, in June, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
