The Plains Forktail (Ischnura damula) occurs across much of the American mid west from parts of northern Canada southward to the Mexico border in Arizona, New Mexico and west Texas. In Texas this species occurs in the Trans-Pecos area and in parts of the Panhandle. The digital shots shown on this page were taken at Buffalo Springs in the Rita Blanca National Grasslands in Dallam Co., Texas in the extreme northwest part of the Panhandle in August 2004 with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 180 Macro F/3.5 lens and 1.4X extender.
The male Plains Forktail shown here was at the Bear River N.W.R., Box Elder Co., Utah, in June, 2007. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The pair of Plains Forktails in copula on the right was on the Brett Gray Ranch, a Nature Conservancy property, in Lincoln Co., Colorado, in July, 2011. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
