Alces alces
The Moose (Alces alces) is a large member of the deer family and is about the size of a horse. In the western hemisphere it occurs across most of Canada and Alaska as well as many of the northern United States. The first 2 shots on this page show a bull with antlers just starting to grow. These 2 shots were taken in June, 2010 near North Conway, Carroll Co., New Hampshire. The next 2 shots show a cow Moose as she crossed a road south of Lee, Penobscot Co., Maine, also in June, 2010.
The bull Moose, with antlers still growing in velvet, was at the Eagle River Nature Area near Anchorage, Alaska, in June, 2012. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The young bull Moose on the right was at Kincaid Park, Anchorage, Alaska, in June, 2012. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
