The Marl Pennant (Macrodiplax balteata) occurs across the southern United States from southern California to the coasts of North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The species is usually, but not always, associated with salt water or other types of saline habitats. The image of the female shown on the right was taken with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200 mm F2.8 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash in Portland, San Patricio Co., Texas, in September, 2003.
The male in the next three images was photographed in extreme south Texas in Hidalgo Co., in August, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 580 flash.
The next two shots of a male Marl Pennant were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in June, 2011, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500 lens with a Canon 580 flash.
